The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has initiated the fall dredging of Oceanside Harbor, a significant shift from its usual spring schedule. This strategic change, conducted in consultation with the City of Oceanside, aims to bolster beach resilience ahead of the anticipated strong El Niño winter, according to Oceanside News.
This year's dredging operation, which began mobilization on September 12, is expected to move approximately 380,000 cubic yards of sand from the harbor channel to Oceanside beaches. The operation is projected to conclude around October 20. The sand placement, starting around September 15, will progress southward from the pier, providing a protective buffer for beachfront infrastructure and recreational areas.
Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution near equipment and marked pathways throughout the dredging process. Additionally, Harbor Lot #12 will remain closed for the duration of the project.
In other local news, the City of Coronado is preparing for its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. Scheduled for Friday, September 11, at 6:53 a.m., the ceremony will be held at the Fire Department Headquarters on 6th Street. Members of the Coronado Fire and Police Departments will offer remarks to honor the lives lost and the first responders who served on September 11, 2001, as reported by Coronado News.
Meanwhile, Coronado will observe Labor Day with several city facility closures. City Hall, the Community Center, Spreckels Center, and the Coronado Public Library will be closed on Monday, September 7, and will reopen on Tuesday, September 8. Additionally, Caltrans has scheduled asphalt grinding and paving on Fourth Street between the D Avenue easterly alley and Orange Avenue for Wednesday, September 9, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The No. 2 and No. 3 lanes, along with the right-turn pocket, will be temporarily closed during the construction. Drivers are urged to follow posted traffic controls and allow extra travel time, according to Coronado News.
