ANDRITZ-led Consortium to Modernize Slovakia's Gabcikovo Hydroelectric Plant

International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube River. The plant is the largest hydroelectric facility in Slovakia and a cornerstone of the country's energy infrastructure, generating approximately 10% of Slovakia's electricity.

The comprehensive project will upgrade the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW. The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and is included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The modernization aims to improve efficiency and availability while extending the service life of key components by at least 30 years.

Under the scope of work, the eight Kaplan turbine-generator units will be refurbished sequentially to minimize operational disruptions. The project includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of upgraded turbine and generator components, as well as modernization of automation, excitation, protection, and control systems. Additionally, transformers and auxiliary electrical systems will be renewed.

This investment underscores the importance of maintaining and upgrading renewable energy infrastructure to meet future energy demands. As Slovakia continues to transition toward sustainable energy sources, the modernization of the Gabcikovo plant ensures it remains a reliable pillar of the national grid. The project also reflects a broader trend in the hydropower sector where aging facilities are being upgraded to enhance performance and integrate with modern grid requirements.

ANDRITZ, with over 185 years of innovation and more than 492 GW of installed capacity worldwide, is a leader in hydropower solutions. The company's expertise in providing customized 'from water-to-wire' services ensures that projects like Gabcikovo are delivered with cutting-edge technology and engineering excellence.

By extending the plant's operational life, this modernization will contribute to the stability and sustainability of Slovakia's energy supply for decades to come. It also represents a significant step in the region's efforts to maximize the potential of renewable energy resources.
