External corrosion poses a significant threat to steel pipelines exposed to soil, moisture, chemicals, and mechanical damage. Selecting the appropriate external coating is therefore a critical design decision that affects pipeline longevity, safety, and maintenance costs. Baolai Steel supports international projects with a range of external surface protection options, including FBE, 3LPE, 3LPP, hot-dip galvanizing, and painted finishes. These solutions are detailed on their external coating pipe page.
For buried and industrial transmission pipelines, three systems dominate: Fusion-Bonded Epoxy (FBE), Three-Layer Polyethylene (3LPE), and Three-Layer Polypropylene (3LPP). Each offers distinct advantages. FBE provides a tightly bonded epoxy layer that acts as a continuous corrosion barrier and is compatible with cathodic protection, making it suitable for many buried oil, gas, and water pipelines. However, single-layer FBE offers less resistance to mechanical damage than three-layer systems, requiring careful handling during transportation and installation.
3LPE adds an adhesive layer and a polyethylene outer layer over the FBE corrosion barrier. This configuration enhances resistance to moisture, impact, abrasion, and handling damage, making it ideal for pipelines that will undergo demanding installation conditions such as trenching and backfilling. 3LPP follows a similar three-layer concept but uses a polypropylene outer layer, which is generally selected for higher service temperatures or more severe mechanical conditions. The choice between these systems should be based on the complete service environment, including operating temperature, soil conditions, installation methods, mechanical damage risk, cathodic protection design, and project specifications.
For exposed piping applications, hot-dip galvanizing and painted finishes may be more appropriate. Galvanizing offers zinc-based corrosion protection for structural and fire protection piping, while painted finishes serve general surface protection and identification purposes.
Coating performance depends not only on the system selected but also on application quality and inspection. Baolai Steel's coating quality control includes surface preparation checks, coating thickness measurement, visual examination, and holiday detection to identify discontinuities. Pipe-end conditions are verified against order requirements, particularly for uncoated cutback areas needed for field welding. Repaired areas are reinspected before shipment approval. Depending on order requirements, inspection records, test reports, and third-party documentation can be provided.
Pipeline procurement rarely involves coating alone. Baolai Steel combines steel pipe manufacturing with coating, secondary processing, inspection, and export support, coordinating more stages of a coated-pipe order through one supply process. Processing options include beveling, threading, grooving, cutting, marking, bending, and galvanizing. This integrated approach helps keep base-pipe production, coating, processing, inspection, and shipment aligned with the same technical and commercial requirements.
For buyers, a clear coating specification is essential. It should define the pipe standard and grade, dimensions, coating system, required thickness, applicable coating standard, operating environment, and any special requirements for pipe ends, inspection, or documentation. For example, a buried water pipeline and a higher-temperature industrial pipeline may use similar steel pipe dimensions but require different external coatings. Installation method, soil conditions, expected handling, service temperature, and cathodic protection requirements are just as important as the nominal coating type. Defining these conditions early allows Baolai Steel to review the order as a complete coated-pipe package.
With annual production capacity of approximately 5 million tons and experience in international orders, Baolai Steel serves both distribution and project-based coated pipe requirements where specification control, coating quality, and coordinated delivery are critical.
