Bradley A. Maron Named New Editor-in-Chief of Circulation, Signaling Focus on Pulmonary Vascular Research and Precision Medicine

The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been named the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, its flagship peer-reviewed journal, effective with the current issue. Maron, a board-certified cardiologist and globally recognized researcher in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, editor from 2004 to 2016. This appointment underscores the Association's commitment to advancing transformative cardiovascular science, particularly in precision medicine and pulmonary vascular disease.

Maron is senior associate dean for precision medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. His research spans basic mechanisms of pulmonary vascular remodeling to clinical applications of network medicine and artificial intelligence. He holds six patents and has co-authored over 260 scientific publications. Maron expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, "I am deeply honored to take on the remarkable role of leading Circulation. I am energized to forge a new path that strengthens and expands on the legacy of the editors before me."

Key innovations under Maron's leadership include a Clinician Lighthouse article offering expert-guided diagnostic interpretation, a Clinician's Corner for real-world practice guidance, and a Patient's Corner to present key content for the public. Graphic abstracts for all research articles and video commentaries for select manuscripts will also be introduced. The journal will streamline its submission process with accelerated review timelines and expanded weekly eTOC alerts. These changes aim to deliver rigorous, practice-changing science more efficiently and transparently.

The new editorial team includes Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, from Washington University School of Medicine, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, from Northwestern University. Ten deputy editors oversee specialty sections, including Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, for Fundamental Sciences, and Ana Mocumbi, M.D., Ph.D., for Global Cardiovascular Health. Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, serves as deputy editor for AI for Process and Science. The journal is editorially independent of the American Heart Association, ensuring open discourse essential to scientific discovery.

Maron's appointment signals a continued emphasis on precision medicine and pulmonary vascular research, areas where his work has clarified clinical risk and advanced therapeutic discovery. He previously held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School and served as a visiting professor at Imperial College London. His leadership is expected to reinvigorate the journal's content and expand its global impact.
