Dr. Glen Gillen Emphasizes Humanity in Healthcare: 'Before Every Diagnosis Is a Human Being'

Dr. Glen Gillen, a leading figure in neurological rehabilitation and occupational therapy, is reminding the healthcare industry that the most critical component of medicine cannot be measured by scans, contained in charts, or replaced by technology: the human connection. His philosophy, grounded in decades of clinical practice, teaching, and research, underscores that every patient is a person first, not a diagnosis.

Gillen, who recently retired from Columbia University after 31 years of service, has helped thousands of stroke survivors regain independence, trained generations of occupational therapists, authored over 200 scholarly publications and textbooks, and earned the profession's highest honors, including the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship. Despite these accolades, he hopes his legacy is defined by his emphasis on empathy and partnership in care.

"No one should ever feel reduced to a diagnosis, a medical chart, or a number," Gillen says. "Meaningful care begins the moment people feel seen, heard, respected, and understood. Every patient deserves to be an active participant in their own care." This perspective is not only clinical but personal, shaped by his own experiences navigating the healthcare system, which reinforced his belief that listening is one of the most powerful forms of care.

As healthcare increasingly adopts artificial intelligence and other technologies, Gillen welcomes innovation but offers a crucial reminder. "Technology can organize information. Algorithms can process data. Artificial intelligence can improve efficiency. But none can replace the trust built between patient and caregiver," he explains. "Technology should enhance healthcare, never replace the human relationship at its center."

Gillen's career includes delivering hundreds of lectures worldwide, authoring foundational textbooks such as Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach and multiple editions of Willard and Spackman's Occupational Therapy, and publishing over 200 peer-reviewed articles advancing neurological rehabilitation and evidence-based practice. His contributions have been recognized internationally, and he is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Even in retirement, Gillen continues writing, speaking, and contributing to the profession. His greatest hope is that future healthcare professionals never lose sight of the person in front of them. "The best care is both clinically sound and deeply human. That is what makes it meaningful," he says.

As medicine evolves, Gillen believes there is an opportunity to embrace innovation while reaffirming a timeless principle: every patient deserves dignity, respect, and genuine human connection. His message is clear: before every diagnosis is a human being.
