Energy Fuels Inc. (NYSE American: UUUU) (TSX: EFR), a leading producer of rare earth elements, uranium, and other critical materials, has announced the completion of its acquisition of Australian Strategic Materials Limited (ASM). This strategic move significantly advances Energy Fuels' goal of building an integrated Western mine-to-magnet supply chain for rare earth permanent magnets, a critical component in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and various defense applications.
The acquisition brings under Energy Fuels' umbrella ASM's operating Korean Metals Plant in South Korea, which currently has a production capacity of 1,300 tonnes per year of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) alloy. This plant is slated for expansion to 3,600 tonnes of annual NdFeB alloy capacity, with commissioning anticipated as early as the end of 2026. The facility also possesses commercial metallization capabilities for neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr), a key rare earth element used in permanent magnets.
Beyond the immediate operational assets, the acquisition adds the Dubbo project in Australia, a long-life resource of rare earths and other critical minerals, to Energy Fuels' portfolio. This complements the company's existing production and expansion initiatives for NdPr, terbium, and dysprosium oxides at its White Mesa Mill in Utah, as well as its heavy mineral sands projects in Brazil, Australia, and Madagascar.
Energy Fuels stated that the combined platform now spans the entire rare earth supply chain, from mining and processing to oxides, metals, and alloys. This positions the company to compete more effectively with China, which currently dominates the global rare earth market. The company's planned acquisition of Vacuumschmelze (VAC), a permanent magnet manufacturer, would further extend this platform into magnet production, creating a fully integrated Western alternative.
Following the completion of the transaction, ASM shares have been delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange. This move consolidates Energy Fuels' position as a major player in the critical materials sector, which is increasingly vital for national security and the global transition to clean energy.
The completion of this acquisition underscores the growing importance of securing a reliable and diversified supply of rare earth elements outside of China. With the global push towards electrification and renewable energy, the demand for rare earth permanent magnets is expected to surge. By integrating these assets, Energy Fuels is not only securing its own supply chain but also contributing to the broader Western effort to reduce dependence on Chinese rare earth exports.
