As government representatives gathered in Geneva for the United Nations' first discussions on global AI governance, environmental advocates warned that one critical issue has received little attention: the potential impact of AI on biodiversity and ecosystems. The talks, aimed at establishing international frameworks for AI regulation, have largely focused on issues like job displacement, privacy, and national security, but campaigners say the environmental risks are being sidelined.
“We are seeing a rush to regulate AI for human-centric concerns, but the natural world is being left out of the conversation,” said a spokesperson from a coalition of environmental groups. “AI systems require vast amounts of energy and resources, and their deployment can disrupt ecosystems in ways we are only beginning to understand.” The advocates are calling for AI governance to include assessments of environmental impact, similar to how other technologies are regulated.
The concerns come amid growing recognition of the environmental footprint of AI. Data centers that power AI models consume enormous amounts of electricity, often from fossil fuels, contributing to carbon emissions. Additionally, the extraction of rare earth minerals for AI hardware can lead to habitat destruction and pollution. The rapid advancement of AI also raises concerns about its use in monitoring and potentially harming wildlife, such as through autonomous drones or AI-driven poaching prevention systems that may have unintended consequences.
“It would be interesting to hear from executives at companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) on how quantum computing systems can play a role in limiting the harm that advanced technologies like AI can cause,” the spokesperson added. Quantum computing, with its potential for more efficient processing, could reduce the energy demands of AI, but its development is still in early stages.
The UN discussions, which began this week, are part of a broader effort to create a global framework for AI governance. However, environmental groups argue that without explicit consideration of biodiversity and ecosystem impacts, any framework will be incomplete. They are urging delegates to include provisions for environmental impact assessments and to ensure that AI development aligns with international environmental agreements.
The warning from campaigners highlights a growing tension between the rapid deployment of AI and the need to protect natural systems. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, its environmental costs are likely to increase, making it imperative that governance mechanisms address these risks from the outset. The UN talks are expected to continue for several days, and advocates are hopeful that nature will be included in the final outcomes.
