Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, effective for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. The new policy replaces the previous weight-based system, offering passengers clearer limits on the number and weight of baggage pieces, with allowances up to two pieces of 32 kg each, totaling 64 kg, depending on route, class, and fare category.
Under the new policy, domestic Economy Class passengers will receive one piece up to 23 kg, while Business and First Class passengers will get two pieces up to 32 kg each. On international routes, Economy Class passengers will receive two pieces up to 23 kg each, and Business and First Class passengers will get two pieces up to 32 kg each. This represents a significant increase from the previous weight-based allowances, with Economy Class on domestic routes rising from 20 kg to 23 kg, and Business Class on international routes increasing from 40 kg to 64 kg.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that the Piece Concept is part of the airline's broader modernization efforts. He emphasized that the change provides passengers with greater certainty and transparency when planning their baggage, from initial booking through departure. The policy also supports more efficient baggage handling and consistency across Garuda's domestic and international networks, as the Piece Concept is widely adopted in the global aviation industry.
Passengers whose tickets are issued before September 1, 2026, will continue to receive the baggage allowance stated on their tickets, even for travel after that date.
