Hong Kong Showcases Role as Gateway for Malaysian Business Expansion at Think Business, Think Hong Kong Symposium

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will bring its flagship promotional campaign, Think Business, Think Hong Kong (TBTHK), to Kuala Lumpur on 11 August, aiming to connect Malaysian businesses with Hong Kong’s network of investors, professional services, and market opportunities across Asia and beyond. The full-day symposium at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur targets Malaysian companies seeking to expand beyond their domestic market, aligning with the country’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which focuses on industrial transformation, sustainability, and integration into global value chains.

Hong Kong, home to nearly 10,000 Chinese Mainland and overseas companies with regional operations, positions itself as Asia’s leading international financial and business centre. Leung Kwan Ho, HKTDC’s Regional Director of South East Asia & South Asia, emphasized Hong Kong’s role as a superconnector and super value-adder for Malaysian businesses. “Through HKTDC’s networks and platforms, we aim to attract more Malaysian businesses to leverage Hong Kong’s advantages and connect them with trusted partners, investors, professional services and market insights, all to help them access the vast opportunities around the world, particularly in the Greater Bay Area and the wider China market, with more confidence,” he said at a press briefing in Kuala Lumpur.

The event will feature discussions on Renminbi internationalisation, sustainability and green innovations, Hong Kong’s role as an international financial hub, and healthcare solutions. Notable guests include Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and YB Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia. A delegation of around 100 government officials and business leaders from Hong Kong will participate, alongside 30 Hong Kong service providers and start-ups showcasing their products in the Business Support Zone and InnoVenture Salon. One-on-one business consultations and on-site matching will facilitate collaboration.

The symposium underscores the strong economic ties between Malaysia and Hong Kong. In 2025, Malaysia was Hong Kong’s third-largest trading partner among ASEAN member states. Hong Kong was Malaysia’s second-largest investor after Singapore, with cumulative FDI of US$34.8 billion and net FDI flow of US$1.6 billion in 2025. The event aims to deepen these ties by providing Malaysian companies with connections, expertise, and market access to pursue opportunities across regional and global markets.
