On September 7, Huawei unveiled the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN, a tri-fold smartphone that is the first to feature the LogicFolding Tau (τ) Chip, signaling its entry into mass commercialization. This release is significant as it demonstrates Huawei's continued innovation in foldable devices and advanced semiconductor technology, despite global market challenges.
The device debuts with a wing-like tri-fold design and is powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which Huawei claims delivers a 42% performance improvement over the previous generation. The phone introduces several industry-first features, including the Xuanwu Ultra-Durable Tri-Fold Architecture, Smart Shield Privacy Screen, True-to-Color Camera 3.0, and HarmonyOS 7 large-screen experience.
One of the most notable aspects is the inclusion of the LogicFolding Tau chip, which represents a leap in chip design and manufacturing. This chip is expected to enhance processing efficiency and enable new capabilities, particularly in AI and on-device processing. The commercial availability of this chip in a consumer device marks a significant step toward broader adoption of such technology.
The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN also boasts an advanced tri-fold mechanism with a 5 curved arm structure and synchronized linkage, providing durability and reliability. It is the first tri-fold phone to support IP58/59 dust and water resistance, and its cover screen uses Xuanwu Kunlun Glass for scratch resistance.
In terms of photography, the True-to-Color Camera 3.0 system improves color reproduction by 95% and includes an ultra-HDR main camera, periscope telephoto, and ultra-wide lens. The phone also supports XMAGE SmartCapture with AIGC real-time previews.
The device runs HarmonyOS 7, which introduces Live-Multitask for parallel app windows and is optimized for large-screen productivity. Huawei has also integrated security features, including a Mobile Security Processor and post-quantum cryptography, ensuring data protection.
The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN is available in Purple, White, and Black, with pricing starting at RMB 19,999. Sales begin on September 12. This launch positions Huawei as a leader in the tri-fold segment and underscores its resilience in the competitive smartphone market.
