The Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) announced that Nancy Willis has been appointed as President & Executive Director, a role she has held in an interim capacity since March 2026. Willis, who joined HSSV in 2023, has been instrumental in guiding the organization through a period of significant challenge and change, including the aftermath of a fire that damaged its Milpitas Animal Community Center in December 2024.
Willis's appointment comes at a critical juncture for HSSV, as it embarks on the next phase of its rebuilding and growth. Her leadership during the interim period has been marked by stability and a deep understanding of the organization's mission and community, according to Peter Detkin, Chair of the HSSV Board of Directors. "Nancy has shown the judgment, resilience and collaborative leadership HSSV needs," Detkin said. "She understands our organization, and the community we serve, and she has helped guide HSSV through one of the most challenging periods in its history. She is well positioned to lead the organization through its next phase of rebuilding and growth."
Willis's tenure at HSSV has been diverse, with roles spanning marketing, oversight of The Fur Ball fundraising gala, and most recently, coordinating the response to the December 2024 fire. Her experience in animal welfare began in 2015 as Director of Development and Marketing at the Maui Humane Society, following a 20-year career in professional sports, including 15 years with Major League Baseball. This background has equipped her with extensive skills in leadership, marketing, fundraising, and event planning, which she now applies to her new role.
In her own words, Willis expressed gratitude for the appointment and confidence in the organization's future. "I am deeply honored to lead Humane Society Silicon Valley and grateful for the trust the Board has placed in me," she said. "Over the past three years, I have seen firsthand the passion and dedication of the people who make HSSV what it is. We have an opportunity to build on that strength, deepen our impact and shape a future that reflects the full potential of this organization."
As President, Willis will focus on strengthening HSSV's programs, operations, and long-term ability to serve pets and people throughout the region. The organization, which is independent and privately funded, provides adoptions, veterinary care, community programs, and regional rescue partnerships, among other services. Willis's leadership is expected to guide HSSV through its rebuilding efforts and ensure it continues to fulfill its mission of saving lives and keeping families together.
