In a recent newsletter, top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella addressed the growing anxiety surrounding artificial intelligence, arguing that the human advantage remains critical to success. Romanella, founder and CEO of 3SIXTY Management Services, contends that while AI is powerful and disruptive, it cannot replace the core human elements of leadership, trust, and inspiration.
Romanella writes that the narrative that 'AI will replace people' has become loud and relentless, diminishing the dignity of hardworking individuals and discouraging the next generation. He emphasizes that technology may change the work, but leadership must still lift the people. AI can process information and analyze patterns, but it cannot inspire belief, build trust, or ignite passion. To illustrate his point, Romanella cites the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's 'Miracle on Ice,' noting that AI could analyze strategies but could not create the emotional spark that led to victory.
Drawing from his own career at UPS, Romanella shares a pivotal moment when he was chosen to lead the integration of Mailboxes Etc. despite lacking traditional qualifications. He recalls his CEO and COO telling him, 'We have faith in you. Be yourself. Learn first, question second.' This experience taught him that leaders can see potential in people before they see it in themselves, a lesson he believes is crucial in the age of AI.
Romanella warns that the greatest danger is not AI replacing people, but people believing they no longer matter. He calls on leaders to restore dignity to the conversation and remind individuals of their value. 'AI is the bus to the future — but people must drive the bus,' he writes, urging leaders to elevate people while leveraging technology.
