Kevin McManus Law has announced Aubrey Schwartze as the recipient of the 2025 Kevin McManus Overcoming Adversity Through Sports Scholarship, awarding her $2,000 for her academic excellence and dedication to athletics. Schwartze, a senior at Vienna High School, was selected for her deeply personal essay that honestly reflects on overcoming physical injuries and emotional setbacks, tracing her lifelong connection to basketball.
Her essay begins with her childhood spent in the gym alongside her father, a high school basketball coach, and details the injuries, recovery processes, and mental hurdles she faced. Drawing inspiration from a childhood song in Barbie: A Princess and the Pauper, Schwartze reflects on how adversity shaped her character and reinforced the truth that destiny is written in the heart.
Schwartze recently made school history by becoming the first student to score 1,500 career points and record 1,000 career rebounds in basketball. Beyond her athletic accomplishments, she demonstrates exceptional leadership by coaching a fourth-grade girls' basketball team. Her leadership extends well beyond the court: she serves as president of her school's National Honor Society chapter and as Senior Class President. She volunteers at blood drives and the local food pantry and organizes the annual Veterans' Day assembly, reflecting consistent service, initiative, and community engagement.
Academically driven, Schwartze plans to attend the University of Central Missouri to pursue a degree in radiologic technology. After graduation, she hopes to work in a sports injury and medicine clinic, helping athletes recover and return to the sports they love. She also plans to continue mentoring young athletes.
