Whatcom Feline Alliance is experiencing record demand for its affordable spay and neuter assistance, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and community support programs as kitten season peaks. The foster-based nonprofit, founded in 2019 by Chelsea Beaugez, focuses on preventing feline overpopulation through accessible sterilization services, and the surge in demand has strained its funding, prompting a call for community help.
The organization works directly with pet owners and community cat caretakers to remove barriers to timely spay and neuter services. Unlike many rescues, Whatcom Feline Alliance provides end-to-end personalized support, including appointment scheduling, transportation assistance, humane trap and carrier loans, pre-surgery preparation, and aftercare guidance. This comprehensive approach makes veterinary care accessible to families facing financial, transportation, or logistical challenges.
"If you can send a text, we can help get your cat fixed. Prevention changes everything, and every cat we help today prevents generations of suffering tomorrow," said Beaugez. The effects extend beyond individual cats: preventing unplanned litters reduces shelter overcrowding, lowers euthanasia rates, improves neighborhood relationships, and promotes healthier outcomes for both cats and communities.
Demand is escalating rapidly. One of the organization's longtime veterinary partners, Dr. Christine Monroe, DVM of Spay Neuter Northwest, recently celebrated performing more than 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries, highlighting the scale of the challenge and the life-changing impact of accessible sterilization programs.
As kitten season continues, Whatcom Feline Alliance encourages residents to support its mission by donating, volunteering, fostering cats, or spreading awareness about early spay and neuter intervention. "Our goal has always been simple," Beaugez said. "Prevent suffering before it begins and make life better for the cats already here."
