Lonza, the world's leading contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has announced the appointment of Samanta Cimitan as its first Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Senior Vice President, and Member of the Extended Executive Committee. She will assume the role by January 1, 2027. This newly created position is a strategic move to strengthen customer engagement, commercial delivery, and a harmonized go-to-market approach across the company's 'One Lonza' strategy.
Cimitan brings extensive business leadership experience in the CDMO industry, currently serving as Chief Executive Officer of the Celonic Group. Her prior tenure at Lonza, spanning nearly 13 years, included roles in commercial and strategy leadership, notably as Vice President of Lonza Group Operations Strategy. In that capacity, she developed and led transformation programs across Commercial, R&D, and Operations, giving her firsthand knowledge of Lonza's operations and culture.
In her new role, Cimitan will lead Strategic Enterprise Account Management, Global Marketing, and Commercial Excellence. She will have direct commercial responsibility for Lonza's strategic accounts and will work to shape a unified go-to-market approach across all three business platforms. The role is designed to make it easier for customers to engage with, access, and navigate Lonza's full end-to-end offering globally.
Wolfgang Wienand, Chief Executive Officer of Lonza, commented on the appointment: "Samanta's appointment to the new role of Chief Commercial Officer is another important step in building One Lonza and making the full power of the Lonza Engine work for our partners in the pharmaceutical industry. Our ambition is clear: Every customer should benefit from the unique breadth of our science, technology and manufacturing capabilities, helping them translate their breakthrough innovations into viable therapies for patients worldwide. Samanta brings deep CDMO expertise, commercial leadership experience and first-hand knowledge of Lonza. She understands what it takes to build trusted partnerships, execute with commercial discipline and create value across the full development and manufacturing journey."
This appointment signals Lonza's intensified focus on commercial excellence and customer-centricity. By creating a dedicated CCO position, Lonza aims to break down silos and ensure that customers can seamlessly access its comprehensive services, from early development to commercial manufacturing. This move is particularly significant in the competitive CDMO market, where customer experience and integrated service offerings are key differentiators.
The implications of this leadership change are far-reaching. For Lonza, it reinforces its commitment to the One Lonza strategy, which seeks to unify operations and present a single face to customers. For the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, it means a more streamlined partnership experience with a global CDMO, potentially accelerating the time-to-market for new therapies. Cimitan's proven track record in commercial strategy and operational execution positions her well to drive this transformational agenda.
Lonza's announcement comes at a time when the CDMO sector is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing demand for biologics and advanced therapies. The company's half-year 2026 sales reached CHF 3.4 billion with a CORE EBITDA of CHF 1.2 billion, underscoring its strong market position. With Cimitan at the commercial helm, Lonza is poised to enhance its competitive edge and better serve its global clientele.
