Makana Charters and Tours, a Native Hawaiian family-owned operator on Kauai's west side, is running its full schedule of Na Pali Coast boat tours through the island's peak summer season. The lineup includes morning and midday snorkel tours, afternoon departures, and sunset cruises along the 17-mile coastline, all operated aboard the company's fleet of custom-built power catamarans.
Summer brings some of the calmest and clearest water of the year to Kauai's west and north shores, making it the period when snorkeling and sea cave conditions are typically most favorable. Calmer, clearer water improves snorkeling visibility, while spinner dolphins are most active during morning tours. Frequent sightings of Hawaiian green sea turtles and reef fish occur at snorkel stops. Longer daylight hours support afternoon and sunset departures, and improved access to sea caves is possible when ocean conditions allow. Note that whale watching is a separate winter offering, with humpback whales typically present from late November through April.
The Makana Charters fleet offers guests several ways to experience the coastline. The Na Pali Kai III (up to 32 guests) features a 360-degree walk-around deck designed for photographers and families, with children ages 4 and up. The Amelia K (up to 36 guests) is the largest catamaran, with two onboard restrooms and an open-air freshwater shower, also for ages 4 and up, departing from Port Allen. The Leialoha (up to 18 guests) is the newest vessel for ages 9 and up. Seiko 1 and Seiko 2 (up to 16 guests each on shared tours) provide a small-group format for ages 9 and up. The Makana (up to 12 guests) offers the smallest and most intimate group experience for ages 9 and up.
Each tour combines snorkeling at protected reef locations, sea cave exploration—including the well-known open-ceiling cave—and views of the cliffs and waterfalls along the Na Pali Coast. Snorkel gear, flotation devices, a deli lunch, snacks, soft drinks, and an onboard restroom are included on every tour. Afternoon and sunset cruises depart from the west side, placing guests on the water as the light across the cliffs shifts to shades of gold and pink. Sea cave entry and snorkeling are subject to weather and ocean conditions.
Most tours depart from Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor in Kekaha; the Amelia K departs from Port Allen. Guests are encouraged to check their reservation confirmation for the correct harbor location. Private charters are available on every catamaran and include the same all-inclusive amenities as shared tours. Guests may also visit the Makana Charters office in Waimea. Peak-season dates fill quickly, and reservations can be made at makanacharters.com or by calling (808) 338-9980.
