Award-winning Brazilian screenwriter and playwright Renata Elis has released a new book, Inclusion Has an Expiration Date, that challenges the entertainment industry's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) promises. The book argues that behind the public relations efforts, the industry maintains closed networks, nepotism, and pay-to-play mechanisms that exclude middle-aged women and other marginalized creators.
Elis, who has worked in the United States and Europe, structures her book like a four-season television series, with each chapter serving as an episode in an investigation into systemic exclusion. She describes how screenwriting workshops, diversity grants, pitch forums, and access programs often function as a 'business of hope,' feeding on creators' dreams while limiting real opportunities to a small, rotating elite.
The book exposes ageism as one of the most socially tolerated forms of discrimination in entertainment, especially against women over 40. Elis notes that while representation appears to expand on screen, mature women remain invisible both in front of and behind the camera. She cites industry data, academic research, and public statements from actresses who have spoken about being marginalized as they age.
Elis argues that this exclusion is not only cultural but also commercially irrational, as women over 50 represent a loyal, experienced, and economically powerful audience. She critiques the broader economic logic behind pay-to-play access, nepotism, and the commodification of creative ambition, suggesting that the problem lies not just in who appears on screen but in who controls the creation, financing, and ownership of stories.
In the book's final section, Elis moves beyond criticism to offer a manifesto and call for change. She advocates for new models of creative ownership, independent production, and audience-centered storytelling, urging creators to bypass traditional gatekeepers.
