New Memoir Chronicles the Hidden Toll of Policing and the Path to Renewed Purpose

Parker Publishers has announced the upcoming release of Between Sirens and Silence: Life After Policing, a memoir by retired Sacramento Police Department officer Jason Palmi. Scheduled for publication on November 4, 2026, the book offers an intimate account of Palmi's 31-year career in law enforcement and the years following his retirement, providing a candid exploration of the emotional and psychological demands placed on officers.

The memoir traces a trajectory familiar to many in the profession: an initial sense of calling, a prolonged period of burnout and disengagement, and the eventual rediscovery of purpose. The title captures the silence that descends not only at retirement but also at the end of every shift, when officers return home and attempt to set aside the day's experiences. Palmi draws on cases and assignments from his time in patrol, the academy, and the field to illustrate the daily realities of police work and the cumulative toll it exacts.

Palmi's narrative speaks directly to readers who may be struggling with similar feelings. He writes for officers who have lost their footing in the job, for those contemplating entry into the profession, and for the families who bear much of the weight of this demanding career. Central to his story is the role of a robust support system and his faith in navigating difficult periods.

Palmi served with the Sacramento Police Department from 1986 to 2017, working in patrol, as an academy instructor, and at the department's Emergency Vehicle Operations Center. After retiring, he relocated to Montgomery, Texas, earned a master's degree at Sam Houston State University, and transitioned into teaching criminal justice at Sacramento City College and later at Sam Houston State, where he continues to educate future officers.

The author's motivation is deeply personal. In his own words, Palmi explains, “I wrote this book with the hope of helping those who wake up dreading a job they once loved and feeling trapped, believing they have no alternative but to be miserable.” He shares his experiences with burnout, self-doubt, and career dissatisfaction to offer an honest story of transformation, emphasizing how self-reflection, personal growth, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can lead to renewed purpose and fulfillment—both during a career and after retirement. The book also provides a realistic perspective on the rewards and challenges of police work while encouraging readers to challenge self-imposed limitations, step beyond comfort zones, and recognize that success is often shaped not by circumstances alone but by mindset, choices, and the courage to change.

Between Sirens and Silence: Life After Policing will be available in eBook, paperback, and hardback formats through Amazon and Ingram Spark.
