Operational Excellence Starts with Strong Internal Communication, Says DELGO CEO Nick Miccarelli

In an era where organizations often chase the latest technology or seek larger budgets to improve performance, Nick Miccarelli, CEO of DELGO Community Transit, argues that the foundational element of operational excellence is often overlooked: internal communication. With over 25 years of service in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and experience in public office, Miccarelli asserts that consistent collaboration and clearly defined expectations are what separate organizations that merely react to problems from those that prevent them.

Miccarelli emphasizes that effective communication goes beyond simply sharing information. It involves ensuring that every member of an organization understands the mission, their specific responsibilities, and how their work contributes to the larger objective. "People often think operational excellence comes from having the newest tools or the biggest budget," Miccarelli said. "In my experience, it starts with communication. When people understand the mission and trust the flow of information, organizations perform better."

This perspective is supported by research. A report by Gallup indicates that employees who clearly understand what is expected of them are significantly more likely to be engaged in their roles. Additionally, findings from the Project Management Institute reveal that poor communication is a contributing factor in many unsuccessful projects, underscoring the importance of consistent information sharing across teams.

Miccarelli believes these lessons apply universally, whether in nonprofits, private businesses, or public agencies. "Communication creates alignment," he said. "When departments operate independently without understanding how their work affects others, small issues can grow into much larger problems. Good communication helps organizations solve challenges before they become obstacles."

As CEO of DELGO Community Transit, Miccarelli works closely with staff, community partners, and stakeholders to enhance organizational coordination and service delivery. He stresses that building reliable systems depends on creating an environment where information flows efficiently across the organization. "Our goal is not simply to communicate more," Miccarelli stated. "Our goal is to communicate clearly. Meetings should have purpose. Expectations should be understood. People should know who owns each responsibility and how decisions are made."

Miccarelli credits his military service for shaping his approach. "In the military, everyone understands that communication can directly affect outcomes," he explained. "That experience taught me the importance of preparation, accountability, and making sure every member of the team understands both their role and the larger mission." He sees these principles as directly transferable to civilian organizations, noting that "people perform better when they understand why their work matters."

Rather than viewing communication as solely a leadership duty, Miccarelli believes it is everyone's responsibility. "Good communication means asking questions when something isn't clear, sharing information that helps others do their jobs, and keeping the mission ahead of individual priorities," he said. To help organizations strengthen their operations, Miccarelli recommends several practical steps: establish clear goals that every department understands, create consistent communication between teams rather than only during problems, encourage employees to ask questions and provide constructive feedback, document processes to maintain clarity as organizations grow, and regularly evaluate internal systems to identify improvement opportunities.

Miccarelli concludes that operational excellence rarely stems from a single dramatic decision. Instead, it comes from "hundreds of small improvements that help people work together more effectively every day." By prioritizing clear communication and alignment, organizations can build a foundation for sustained success.
