Quantum BioPharma (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) has received FDA clearance to proceed with Phase 2 clinical development of its lead multiple sclerosis (MS) candidate, Lucid-MS (Lucid-21-302). The approval of the Investigational New Drug (IND) application allows the company to initiate a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study designed to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of the drug in people with MS, using both clinical and radiological measures. Trial start-up activities, including site selection, are already underway, with patient enrollment and drug administration expected to begin as soon as possible.
Lucid-MS is a first-in-class candidate that offers a novel approach to MS treatment by focusing on neuroprotection through the inhibition of demyelination. Unlike existing MS therapies that primarily modulate the immune system, Lucid-MS targets protein arginine deiminase 2 (PAD2), an enzyme implicated in myelin degradation. Preclinical models have demonstrated that Lucid-MS can prevent and even reverse myelin breakdown, which is the underlying cause of MS. The company also noted that Lucid-MS exhibited a favorable safety profile and was well tolerated in prior Phase 1 trials involving healthy participants.
The FDA clearance marks a critical milestone for Quantum BioPharma, as it advances a potential therapy that could address the root cause of MS rather than just managing symptoms. Current MS treatments often focus on reducing immune system attacks on the central nervous system, but they do not directly promote myelin repair. By targeting the mechanism of demyelination, Lucid-MS could offer a complementary or alternative approach that may improve long-term outcomes for patients.
The company’s financial position appears stable, with more than $10 million in cash, digital assets, and liquid investments reported as of March 31, 2026. This funding is likely to support the upcoming Phase 2 trial, although additional capital may be required as the study progresses. The advancement of Lucid-MS into Phase 2 trials is a significant step forward for the company and for the MS community, as it brings hope for a therapy that could halt or even reverse disability progression.
