The Georgia Latino Film Alliance (GALFA) has announced that Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban-born actor, writer, director, and producer with over 150 film and television credits, will receive the Excellence in Filmmaking Award at the 15th Annual Georgia Latino International Film Festival (#GALIFF2026). The ceremony is scheduled for September 30, 2026, at Atlanta's Fox Theatre, as part of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
Sanchez's journey from a decorated U.S. Navy veteran to a Hollywood mainstay is a testament to his resilience. His breakout role in John Singleton's 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) launched a career that includes recent appearances in Apple TV+'s Palm Royale and Cape Fear, as well as Netflix's Running Point and Paramount+'s Dexter: Original Sin. Beyond acting, Sanchez has expanded into filmmaking, writing, directing, and producing projects like the upcoming romantic drama The Café.
Dr. Jose Marquez, CEO and Founder of GALFA, praised Sanchez for embodying "the undeniable power of resilience and self-determination." Marquez highlighted Sanchez's role in "dismantling systemic barriers, mentoring emerging talent, and redefining how Latino stories are told and valued globally." Yvette Moise, President and Co-Founder of GALFA, added that Sanchez is "an industry force actively engineering career pathways for Latino and Afro-Latino creators behind the camera."
Sanchez expressed humility at the recognition, stating, "Longevity in Hollywood isn't an accident; it is built on discipline, quiet preparation, and creating the doors you wish were open when you started." He dedicated the honor to every storyteller working to ensure Latino voices are heard.
The festival, now in its 15th year, will feature five days of screenings, panels, and cultural events. The opening gala will also commemorate 150 Years of Mexican Filmmaking. Sponsors include the Fox Theatre, Olé Mexican Foods, Fulton Films, VensureHR, 222Creative, Women in Film and Television Atlanta (WIFTA), Georgia Films, and the DeKalb Entertainment Commission.
