Nearly 100 participants on motorcycles, Slingshot vehicles, and cars gathered beneath a freeway viaduct in South Los Angeles on Sunday, July 19, before traveling in a memorial motorcade to a local park to honor the life and legacy of Eric Washington. Washington, 37, was tragically killed in a shooting while attempting to de-escalate a conflict during a neighborhood block party in Compton. Gunfire erupted during the incident, claiming the lives of Washington and a 19-year-old woman. Family members, friends, community leaders, and supporters came together to remember a man widely recognized for his commitment to serving others and strengthening his community.
Among those who paid tribute, though unable to be present, was California State Assemblyman Mike Gipson, who worked closely with Washington for several years. Gipson described him as a "talented communicator, community organizer, and enterprising thinker" who served as a representative for California's 64th Assembly District. "Serving families with grace and pride was fitting work for a son of South Los Angeles and Compton—an incredible protégé and friend," said Gipson. "He was extraordinarily talented, a passionate and focused man who loved the community, gave his heart and soul for the people, and always put them first." Reflecting on the circumstances of Washington's death, Gipson added, "I am dismayed that what he fought against took his life. It is no surprise that during the moment of this terrible act, Eric was trying to save a community by preventing a situation that would have taken lives. This bravery cost him his own life."
Washington's mother, Ms. Johnson, traveled from Texas to Los Angeles for the memorial. Addressing the crowd before the motorcade departed, she shared a heartfelt message of peace and her son's commitment to uplifting the community. During the event, participants received from Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International copies of The Way to Happiness, a common-sense guide to better living written by humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. Ms. Johnson expressed support for the booklet's message and its emphasis on personal responsibility and positive community values. One passage from the booklet states: "All you have to do is keep the Way to Happiness flowing in the society. The conduct and actions of others affects your own survival. Like gentle oil spread upon the raging sea, calm will flow outward and outward."
Organizers said the memorial served not only as a tribute to Washington's life but also as a call for greater peace, unity, and respect within communities throughout Los Angeles. The event underscored the ongoing challenges of gun violence and the importance of community-led efforts to foster safety and reconciliation. Washington's death, occurring as he tried to prevent further bloodshed, highlighted the risks faced by those who intervene in conflicts.
