Stonegate Capital Initiates Coverage on Yum! Brands, Highlighting Shift to Taco Bell and KFC Growth

Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), drawing attention to the company's evolving business model following the Pizza Hut divestiture. The firm's analysis of second-quarter 2026 results indicates that Yum!'s growth is now increasingly driven by Taco Bell in the U.S. and KFC's international expansion, with the post-Pizza Hut portfolio showing robust metrics.

Excluding Pizza Hut, Yum! reported system sales growth of 7%, unit growth of 6%, same-store sales growth of 4%, and core operating profit growth of 8% in the second quarter. These figures underscore the strength of the remaining brands. Taco Bell continues to serve as the primary growth engine in the U.S., although a recent food safety issue in July is expected to create a near-term interruption. Stonegate views this as temporary, noting that sales trends have improved from the July 18 low, online sentiment has returned to pre-issue levels, and brand-love measures remain intact.

KFC presents the largest long-term development opportunity, supported by attractive franchisee economics and significant international whitespace. In the second quarter, KFC opened 660 gross restaurants across 55 markets, achieving 7% unit growth. The division continues to target higher average unit volumes and same-store sales, with an estimated 20,000-unit whitespace opportunity globally. This expansion is complemented by a stronger restaurant-level performance, which supports franchisee returns and accelerates unit development, ultimately contributing to Yum!'s recurring royalty base.

The Pizza Hut divestiture is expected to leave Yum! increasingly concentrated on its higher-growth, predominantly franchised KFC and Taco Bell businesses. The transaction is projected to generate approximately $2.3 billion in aggregate net proceeds. Stonegate anticipates that these funds will be used for revolver repayment and substantial share repurchases, alongside continued unit development and royalty growth across the remaining portfolio.

This strategic shift positions Yum! to capitalize on the strengths of its core brands. With Taco Bell's U.S. momentum and KFC's international reach, the company is well-aligned to deliver sustainable growth. The temporary disruption from the food safety issue is not expected to derail the long-term trajectory, as consumer sentiment and sales trends are already recovering. Stonegate's initiation of coverage highlights the potential for Yum! to generate value through its focused portfolio and disciplined capital allocation.
