UGI Utilities employees are donating hundreds of literacy kits to schools as part of the company’s celebration of 35 years of partnering with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF). The initiative underscores the company's commitment to education and community engagement, providing students with resources to foster a love of reading.
According to the announcement, UGI Utilities has been a long-time supporter of RIF, which is the nation's largest children's literacy nonprofit. The literacy kits include books and educational materials designed to help students improve their reading skills. This year's donation is particularly significant as it marks over three decades of collaboration between the utility company and the literacy organization.
The kits are being delivered to schools in the communities served by UGI Utilities, which operates as a natural gas and electric utility serving more than 760,000 customers across 46 counties in Pennsylvania and one county in Maryland. By focusing on literacy, UGI Utilities aims to support the foundational skills that students need to succeed academically and beyond.
John Mason, a spokesperson for UGI Utilities, highlighted the importance of this partnership in fostering a culture of reading among young learners. The company's employees have actively participated in assembling and distributing the kits, demonstrating a grassroots commitment to education. This initiative is part of broader efforts by UGI Utilities to engage with local communities and address educational disparities.
Reading Is Fundamental has a long history of mobilizing volunteers and resources to get books into the hands of children. UGI Utilities' support helps expand RIF's reach, particularly in underserved areas. The literacy kits are designed to complement school curricula and encourage independent reading, which research shows is critical for cognitive development and academic achievement.
The donation comes at a time when literacy rates are a growing concern nationwide. Programs like this not only provide immediate resources but also inspire long-term engagement with reading. UGI Utilities' partnership with RIF exemplifies how corporate social responsibility can have a tangible impact on education.
