The American Heart Association is warning that the convergence of wildfire smoke from Canadian fires and record summer temperatures poses a critical threat to heart health, particularly for individuals with existing cardiovascular conditions. Dr. Manesh R. Patel, volunteer president of the American Heart Association, emphasized that the combination is extremely dangerous and urged the public to take protective measures.
While respiratory issues are commonly associated with wildfire smoke, research underscores its severe impact on the cardiovascular system. Fine particulate matter in smoke can trigger major cardiovascular events even in healthy individuals. A study published in Circulation found that the risk of fatal heart attacks nearly doubled during days with extreme heat and high levels of fine particle pollution, with women and older adults facing even greater risks. Additionally, research in the Journal of the American Heart Association linked heavy wildfire smoke exposure to a 70% increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, affecting both genders and adults aged 35–64, particularly in lower socioeconomic communities.
To mitigate risks, Dr. Patel recommends staying indoors with doors and windows closed, using high-efficiency air filters, and limiting outdoor activity during peak heat hours from noon to 3 p.m. Wearing masks outdoors, staying hydrated with water, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine are additional precautions. It is also crucial to monitor vulnerable individuals, including older adults and those with chronic conditions, and to bring pets indoors. Recognizing symptoms of heart attack or stroke—such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and nausea—and calling 911 immediately can save lives. For heat stroke, signs include body temperature above 103°F, rapid pulse, and confusion.
